Outdoor Swingset Events: How to Enjoy These Activities in Your Homes

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Recreational and leisure parks in the US work their way to provide your kids with much pleasure. They often schedule outdoor swingset events that will make you bond with your kids. It is with no doubt that they help nurture your kids to make them develop their strengths and other capabilities.

While the outdoor swingset options offered by recreational parks in your locale are ideal to make your children feel happy at some points in their lives, you may also try to build one for you in that empty space in your garden. If there are events prepared by these parks, you may do the same activities in your homes too. Take a look at how you may make these events available in your outdoor swingset.

Your outdoor swingset and Crown Point Parks and Recreation
Crown Point Parks and Recreation is a popular department that oversees parks in Indiana. The association creates a program of activities that will provide pleasure to the entire family. It has been their commitment to maintain outdoor swingset and other facilities seen in different parks in the area.

Just recently, Crown Point Parks Department sponsored a Swing Set Storytime endeavor for mothers and their kids whose age ranges from 1 to 5. The affair was conducted last July 29 to August 19. This was already a second session for the activity that was staged in Collins Park every Tuesday for the said dates. The fee was $20 for residents while non-residents were charged $30 each.

If you were not able to catch up with this activity sponsored by Crown Point Parks, you may be able to organize these events over and over again if you invest on an outdoor swingset now. With a playground in your home, you may even schedule Saturdays or Sundays for your own outdoor swingset story time. In fact, it will be a good idea if you invite your neighbors and close friends to come over to the event.

Additionally, you do not have to invest much on this activity. Have a simple bonding time with your kids and eat together once story telling time is over. The outdoor swing set will be the witness to an event that you have planned. You do not have to spend $20 for it.

Lincoln Park activities and events you may do in your outdoor swingset
Another popular park in the US is the Lincoln Park. This one is located in Chicago and is a good place where a lot of families spend their free time together. Visitors who go over to Lincoln Park enjoy watching their kids on the outdoor swingset provided in the place. Some would also witness fireworks display or enjoy watching softball games played by strangers.

If you have your own outdoor swingset in your backyards, there is no doubt you may enjoy these activities too. While other kids play on the swings, slides and rock climbing walls, some who are waiting for their turn may devise their very own football and baseball games. At least with an outdoor swingset in your gardens, you know the people you are dealing with.

Who says that leisure activities may only be enjoyed in recreational parks? You too may improvise events in your own outdoor swingset. There is no doubt that you and your kids as well as your neighbors may have time to gather on the playground and have a fun time together.

How to Buy an Outdoor Play Set – Three Factors to Consider

Monday, November 30th, 2009

As a parent, it would be great for you to consider buying an outdoor play set for your children. An outdoor play set would balance out your children’s life; instead of them sitting around in front of the television set, the computer or their gaming console all day, they would have opportunities to play outside and get some exercise. Exercise and sunshine are important in making your kids healthy and strong.

However, how should you go about buying an outdoor play set? After all, the play set that you buy must suit your children, as well as guarantee their comfort and safety. Here are four considerations that you should weigh when buying an outdoor play set.

1. Your children’s needs. You have a lot of choices when it comes to play sets made for the outdoors. You can purchase a set that has tire swings, monkey bars, forts, slides and various accessories. You can get them in wood, metal or plastic. All these choices available to you can be overwhelming, but you can make the right decision by looking at them with your children’s needs in mind.

Your choice of an outdoor play set should be appropriate for your children’s ages. At the same time, the play set must be able to grow with your children. It must be a play set that they will not tire playing even as they become older.

2. Your children’s safety. Of course, your children’s safety should be the most important consideration that you should have in your mind when it comes to buying an outdoor play set. Most parents believe that plastic play sets are the safest for children, but wooden play sets and even metal play sets can be safe if the manufacturer did its job correctly.

When you buy an outdoor play set, you should make sure that the play set is properly made, without any loose joints, sharp edges or anything sticking out that can harm your child. Also, it should not be made or contain materials that can cause injuries or illness to your child, such as lead paint or toxic chemical treatments.

3. What you can afford. Lastly, you should also consider how much you can afford to spend on an outdoor play set. Most play sets are not expensive; you can get a complete set with accessories for around $800. That is only a fraction of the cost of taking your kids to a family holiday, and it is certainly more cost-effective than buying your kids the latest computer games and gaming consoles as soon as they are released.

You can even pull the price down a bit more by buying a pre-made outdoor play set that you can assemble on your own. It can be a weekend do-it-yourself project that you can work on with your children.

4. The available space. How much space do you have on your yard that you can set aside for an outdoor play set? If you have a big property with a lot of space, then you can go all-out with the play set. However, if your yard is a bit on the small side, you may have to settle for a play set with a smaller scale.

A Parent’s Dilemma: Childhood Obesity Is on the Rise

Monday, November 30th, 2009

“Our health care costs have grown along with our waistline,” said Jeff Levi, PhD, executive director of Trust for America’s Health. “The obesity epidemic is a big contributor to the skyrocketing health care costs in the United States.”

Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1980. The states with a higher obesity rate are those in the South, including Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia; they all have a prevalence of 30 % or more. That means that out of 100 children, 30 meet criteria for obesity. Concerning and sad statistics.

The latest CDC obesity data also indicates that none of the 50 states achieved the Healthy People 2010 goal of reducing obesity prevalence to 15 % or less.

Pediatricians use Body Mass Index (BMI) to asses obesity in childhood. It is an easy, fast way to determine who is at risk during the yearly health supervision visit. Reviews of data from pediatric patients indicate a clear correlation between BMI and lower socioeconomic status, based on parent’s education and family income. But, why is this happening, contrary to what history teaches us?

About 500 years ago, wealthy individuals were the ones showing a distension of their waistline. Looking at European history, those who were rich and powerful could afford more food, and being fat was a sign of prosperity. Today, the economic crisis is causing the opposite effect: food prices for nutritious foods are expected to go up and eating healthy is going to be more difficult to afford. These days it is less expensive to go out for a hamburger and fries that to make the effort to prepare good food at home. It is also faster and it takes less work.

Parents today must make an effort to increase the quality of the food they give to their kids and make sure they are getting enough exercise. And don’t forget about portion size. The only way for parent to ensure their children’s future health is by taking control of their eating habits now. If we give it enough time Health Insurance Companies are going to start paying attention to the correlation between childhood obesity and the development of chronic health problems later in life. I believe they are already aware and considering what to do next. The only feasible solution will be to charge more to those at risk, that is, those who’s BMI is outside of what is considered normal.

At our office we run a Nutrition Management Program for kids. I have observed how difficult it is to maintain good eating habits when the whole family already has an increased BMI. I have also decided to intervene earlier, when the child is starting to cross percentiles in the wrong direction. It is then apparent that loosing or maintaining weight is a lot easier and, since the results of a diet plan are seen faster, the whole family is more likely to participate.

Exercise is at the other side of the equation. After all Energy Intake = Energy Expenditure, if we want to avoid accumulation of fat tissue. Studies have demonstrated a clear correlation between obesity and the presence of a TV set in the child’s bedroom. Remember when you used to walk 3 miles to school over 1 foot of snow?

What are we supposed to do?

My advice is to consult your doctor in order to identify where the main obstacle to good health is. We all know the list, but it is crucial to create a priority and tackle one difficulty at a time. It is reassuring to observe how some intervention, even a small one, makes an impact in the child’s weight when it is early enough. When the “to do” list is too long everybody gets discouraged and it is more improbable to delay doing anything.

Don’t forget to ask your pediatrician what your child’s BMI is at a well-child visit. That is the time to discuss eating issues. Sick visits tend to be quicker, the main concern being to identify and treat what is wrong.

Don’t feel embarrassed if you fail. It is important to keep trying and attend follow-up appointments to reinforce what you have learned and share difficulties you may encounter. It takes about 1 year to go through the process of changing eating habits. Just keep going. Never give up.

Board certified pediatrician Dr. Marta Katalenas is leading the charge against the childhood obesity epidemic, perhaps the most widespread pediatric health concern faced by our society today. Dr. Katalenas has written a series of articles with practical advice for parents on how to keep their kids fit and health. Dr. Katalenas operates the Pediatric Center of Round Rock in Round Rock, Texas.

Start Family Traditions When Your Children are Young

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Family traditions are the glue that unites a family, and these special moments help mold and shape your children. Among the many traditions our family enjoys, our favorite by far takes place on Thanksgiving. Now that my children are young adults, I can witness the effect this tradition has on them.

Each Thanksgiving morning, another family joins us at a house at the beach, to assemble 40 Thanksgiving meals. Each meal includes turkey with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and cranberry sauce, filled into a carry-out container. We then add a roll, cookie, plastic silverware and a juice box, to make the meals complete.

Each person oversees a segment of the meal, whether it’s cooking, scooping, or assembling. I cook the turkeys the day before, so the whole process takes just a couple of hours. We then load the meals into boxes, get in the car, and drive to the Atlantic City boardwalk. It doesn’t take long to find people in need of food, more this year than ever before.

Practically every person we offer a meal to is incredibly appreciative. There is no greater feeling than feeding someone who is hungry, and the smiles on my children’s faces offer proof of that all day. As we seek out the people who would benefit from our meals, our family bonds. We tell jokes, actually referring to the day as “Bad Joke Holiday.” We enjoy the ocean breeze and brisk wind that often accompanies the November day and reflect on how thankful we are to be able to share with others.

This year we gave our meals out in record time. Sadly, there are too many hungry people. Yet, being able to help just a few is very meaningful to us all. It doesn’t matter what your traditions are, but repeating them year after year for your children is priceless.

Important Single Parenting Tips

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Have you ever seen yourself in a situation wherein you would have to raise your child on your own? Have you fully understood the impact of this circumstance in your entire life? Single parenting is not easy at all. If couples encounter difficult situations in rearing their children, how much more having to raise a kid all by yourself?

You can never say that taking care of a child is a piece of cake. You have to teach a child how to aim in the toilet, hold the spoon to feed himself or herself, gargle when brushing, and many others. As he or she starts with school, you should attend the programs and activities that your child will be joining in. Recitals, dictation tests, quiz bees, dances, and the likes would always require your presence. And this only goes to show that your time is necessary and single parenting can make it a bit hard on your part.

What if you are a middle class parent and you don’t have much means to provide your child with everything that he or she needs? How will you go about all the expenses then? Again, this is another challenge to single parenting. It is your conscience that you will be going against as you may always think that you are a failure in this aspect.

Hence, a sense of guilt oftentimes cuts deep into the heart of any parent. When it comes to single parenting, one doesn’t fully know whether he or she is already giving more. At the end of it all, you as the parent are always asking the same question over and over again as to whether you are doing well enough in promoting the happiness of your child and ensuring that he or she gets the best of everything you are capable of giving.

One good reason as to why single parenting is deemed to be a tough task is because you have to act as both the mom and the dad. You will be the provider and at the same time the caretaker. While it seems to be obviously a very difficult task, it is not impossible for you to attain it. There are a couple of tips that you may keep in mind to be certain that parenting for you becomes an enjoyable experience.

A great tip to apply in single parenting is no other than that of showing your child how much you love him or her. This will assure the child that he or she belongs.

Then, don’t fall short of expressing your affection through words. You are your child’s security blanket so make it a point to assure him or her very often.

Read to your child before he or she sleeps. Your child may be too young to understand it yet but this experience will let him or her understand the concept of quality time.

Another great single parenting tip is for you to go out with your child. Show him or her around and do things together.

Single parenting can be made easy if only you know how to balance your time and have your child as your top priority.

Outdoor Playset Designs: Different Options For a Great Playtime

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

One of the conveniences offered by outdoor playset purchases are the different designs that your children may enjoy. As you sit down with your children and discuss about these things, you will surely come up with the right choice. These creative play pieces will make your children look forward to their playing time.

Why are different outdoor playset designs necessary? These designs will allow you to see what fits your backyards accordingly. Additionally, you may look at it as a good backyard attraction too. Even if most of the choices you see are made of wood, the variations will make you feel that there are options that will blend well with the bonding time you set with your kids.

Enjoying outdoor playset designs – size choices
Outdoor playset designs were created to construe with the needs of your children while looking at the available space you have allotted on your backyard for the project. Basically, there are play sets that may go as tall as 15 feet and 6 inches to as short as only 8 feet and three inches. The basic width for an outdoor playset ranges in between 13 feet and 1 inch to 17 feet and 3 inches.

Aside from looking into these dimensions, you are required to provide at least 6-foot perimeters around the outdoor playset. This will make a safer play place for your children. The perimeters should have grasses or synthetic material for proper cushioning in case your children will have minor accidents.

Roofing and basic features for outdoor playset designs
Creativity is promised in your outdoor playset designs. Generally, you will see play sets with roofs that are triangular in form. These ones are often made of wood while some may also be made out of other materials. Typically, you will also see canopy and tent styles for your outdoor playset roofs.

The playhouse will not be complete without the slides, ladders and rock climbing walls. Slides are available in eight to ten-inch height in wave forms. You may also have angled-access ladders with flat steps. Deluxe versions of play sets considered putting up rope ladders for older and more adventurous kids. Monkey bars, trapeze and swings are also worthy of praises for different outdoor playset designs.

Other features for your outdoor playset – making bonding time even better
Additionally, manufacturers have incorporated built-in sandboxes or built-in picnic tables for your outdoor playset. Lunch counters also add up to the beauty of the slide. These items can make bonding time even more favorable for you and your family.

You may build picnic grounds during weekends where you may cook food and eat what you have prepared for lunch. You may also lay down sleeping mats on the garden and enjoy a breath of fresh air while you rest after taking your meal. Listen to your kids as they laugh their hearts out and enjoy their childhood with the outdoor playset you have invested on.
The different outdoor playset designs will make your children happy. They may also benefit you as parents. Make it a point that you spend a break with your family through these playground pieces.

The History of a Playset : How it Came to Existence

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

You have been looking forward to have a playset installed in your own backyards. You want to purchase one for your children. But was there ever a time you tried to look into where the playset came from? Did you ever bother to see through how these items were developed?

A playset would not be possible if wooden toys were not introduced in the market. Miniature wooden toys actually led to the conceptualization of play pieces that are larger than life. Trace facts on the history that brought about the manufacture of the wooden playset you have known of today.

Early civilization to the 1700’s- wooden toys came first before a playset
Archeologists have looked for early traces of toys and kinds of playset played by our ancestors. Even back then, girls enjoyed toys while boys dealt with chariots and horses. All of these items were found out to be made of wood. This is what is considered as the wooden playset or wooden toys before.

From the early civilization, people continued to enjoy each wooden playset they come across with. It was during the 1700’s when the Germans took their own efforts to make wooden toys for public consumption. Marketers found their way out of Germany and travel around Europe to make these types of wooden playset know to other citizens of the continent. From the travel, these tradesmen accepted custom-made orders from people who want a playset. Back then, wooden animals and dolls were favorites of Europeans.

The 1800’s – more elaborate definitions for a playset
During the 1800’s, toymakers saw a better opportunity to redefine the wooden playset or toy marketed in Europe. Back then, these craftsmen were able to create wooden doll houses and miniatures of opera houses which were very popular in the continent.

Other wooden toys that sold easily during this era were wooden toy soldiers, wooden trains and wooden tracks. The Jack-in-a-box playset you know of today came from this century. This was the period when the toy was made colorful by toymakers.

World War II – a period of decline for the wooden playset
When plastic manufacturing was introduced in the toy industry after World War II, craftsmen who used to manufacture a wooden playset opted for the said materials. Plastic was known to be cheaper than lumber thus they thought that they will save more by using such inputs for the creation of a playset. Adding to the decline of the wooden playset is the fact that more families only had the means to pay for toys that are made out of plastic.

Now, the wooden playset that everybody is looking for had been made into larger projects like swings and playhouses. Children look forward to having these things in their homes. You should consider having the playset in your backyards to make your children’s learning process even better.

In this recent time, the playset found in local playgrounds, educational institutions and leisure parks are made out of a combination of wood, metal and plastic. Everybody else is enjoying this combination. Apparently wood is still a frontrunner when it comes to durability. If you want a playset to last long in your possession, choose one that is made out of wood.

Positive Parenting

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

In modern Britain when parents are expecting a baby it is quite natural and almost expected that parents will attend anti-natal courses to prepare them for the birth and maybe the first 6 months of their child’s life. Somehow however there is still a feeling in modern society that once you are through this initial stage of your child’s life the rest come naturally and that parenting is an instinctive skill that we should all have.

If any help was needed then new parents would typically have looked to their parents and wider family for parenting tips and parenting advice. However in more modern fast moving societies like Britain today family units are much more mobile and fragmented and thus often this ‘traditional’ support is no longer available. This has left a vacuum for parents who often are faced with challenges in bringing up their children that they do not know how to deal with no family support to help them.

Faced with this situation many parents would just hope they can muddle through – others would read books or parenting guides for parenting tips which may or may not have helped them resolve the issue.  But as many parents will have found, as their children grow the issues change. Problems with bedtimes or mealtimes get resolved then homework becomes an issue and often the teenage years loom large in the background like a black cloud on the horizon moving ever closer.

In the last decade or so parents have become more aware of ‘Positive Parenting’. Positive Parenting is a broad term that covers a range of life skills. These parenting skills can be learnt in the same way that one might learn the skills associated with any job and when learnt can allow parents to be much more effective in their interactions with their children so that their relationship with them and their whole experience of the years their children are growing up can be enriched.

The Parent Practice is an organisation based in SW London that has been teaching positive parenting skills to parents for the last 10 years.   The Parent Practice produces parenting  guides in the form of short publications, books and CDs but our main work is done face-to-face via parenting courses.

Ten Sources of Help for Parents

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

At one time or another we all need help and parents are no exceptions. Parents have long lamented that children do not come with an instruction manual. Sometimes parenting can be a lonely job and parents simply need to feel validated that they are on the right track with their kids. There are also sources that can give a parent new ideas on how to care for their children better.

One of the first places a parent can go for help is parenting magazines. As a rule magazines will give a good overview on accepted thoughts on child development and health issues. Every once in a while a magazine will publish something that seems a bit off or contrary to common sense. This can happen can magazines can be inclined to be a bit sensational to sell more issues.

Another source of help is your child’s school counselor. They can be a great place to go if your child has learning disabilities or problems with friends in school. Anytime a child is having difficulty in school, a school counselor is one to approach.

Your child’s teacher is also a great source of help. A teacher spends hours a day in a room with twenty or more youngsters of approximately the same age. A teacher will have a good feel for what is the expected development for a child of that age. Teachers can also give an adult perspective of what is going on between one child and another at school.

The internet can be a dubious source of help for parents. Anybody can publish anything on the internet so be careful of this source. On the other hand the website for a real world parenting resource can be very helpful. An example of this would be the website for the La Leche League which offers breastfeeding support or the website for the American Academy for Pediatrics for children’s health issues. Parents can also find empathy and advice from other parents in forums, chat rooms and on blogs.

Your church or other religious affiliation can be a good source of help for parents. Churches can offer instructional support on parenting skills in the form of parenting classes or Sunday School classes. They can also offer practical helps such as babysitting, preschool programs, scouting programs and consignment sales for children’s clothing. They can be a social outlet for parents and their kids. They are also a good place to find other parents with the same values that you have.

Books are a great source of parenting advice by the experts and can be purchased online or in bookstores. Another great source of books is your public library. Books can give you the perspective from other parents, as well as educational and medical experts.

People you know like your friends who are parents, your own parents and your grandparents can be a source of help. Friends can swap babysitting, parenting anecdotes and sympathy with you. Your parents can also be a source of advice, but do not feel you must follow their advice just because they are your parents. You are still the parent of your child and must weigh all the advice you get before you choose to act on what feels right for your child.

Parenting is a difficult job and parents need all the help they can get. Every child, parent and family situation is different, so parents cannot automatically assume that advice will translate well to their own circumstances. However the above sources can be very helpful when considered with care. Sources such as these can be great for providing creative new ways of considering a problem and its solutions.

Gabriella enjoys sharing parenting advice and writes about topics such as toddler bed sheets, toddler bed sets and toddler bed furniture.
