We are hearing about weight being a problem in our children. The resolution begins very early in life. Keep them moving. Children naturally want to move about and explore. Encourage your child to cross the room on their knees. Keep them going when they get to their feet. Our parents would tell us to go outside and play when we got big enough. I think mom was just looking for a moment of peace. The result was a more energetic and thinner group of kids.
Less vigorous activity has crept into our society as technology has advanced. The little car that was powered by pumping legs was replaced by a battery powered car. Hide and seek was replaced by the latest video game where the fingers got all the exercise. This has made for less active and sedentary activity. This started to change the make up of our kids a little bit at a time. Now too many children are accustomed to playing in front of the TV instead of chasing down a friend. Encourage them to get out and go for a walk.
Technology may help with keeping the children moving. The new video games are including actual body movement versus a simple joystick. This can be very helpful during the winter months. Maybe some of the newer work out equipment will catch the attention of your child. If that does not work, find active work that keeps them moving. Use whatever technology that catches your child’s attention.
I believe that an active life all starts in the first few years of life. Get those little legs and arms used to moving as early as you can. Continue to encourage physical activity at all stages of your child’s development. This will become the norm not the exception. The result will be stronger muscles and improved cardiovascular conditioning. Your child will be drawn to active events which improves their whole life experience. A higher activity level also encourages a good level of eating. When you incorporate a good diet along with the good activity, your child will enjoy their life to the fullest. Start them moving early and keep them moving for a good long life.
