Fun Gross Motor Activities for Kids

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Gross Motor Development is the development of the large muscles in our body. The muscles that are responsible for our ability to walk, run, and simply move around. We can see great changes in a child’s gross motor development between the ages of 3 and 5:

The three year old child can:
Walk, run, turn and stop.
Coordinate in various situations.
Begin to balance.
Exhort energy when playing but still needs to rest.

The four year old child can:
Walk, run, turn and stop.
Begins to learn how to skip.
Is generally able to balance and climb.
Play and stay active with out needing a rest period.

The five year old child can:
Walk, run, and skip.
Coordinate their movement so that they are able to swim, ride a bike, skate.
Balance, jump, and climb well.
Remain active for long periods and has a high energy level.

There are four general rules parents should keep in mind when helping develop their child’s gross motor skills:
First, protection. Children need large spaces where they can run around safely without getting hurt.
Second, friends. Including your child’s peers in the activities makes it much more fun and enjoyable.
Third, be patient! It takes time to acquire skills such as skipping, balancing and catching a ball. Do not get frustrated if your child is unable to master these skills in short periods of time.
And finally, practice. Take the time to practice these new skills with your child.

Here are some examples of easy gross motor activities for preschoolers:

Shake it!
In this body awareness gross motor activity for preschoolers game, get you child to identify body parts and then shake them. Shake your head, knees, hands, arms and so on.

Ankle walk
Get your child to hold their ankles with their hands and walk. This is a great way to improve their coordination and directional awareness.

Red Light, Green Light
A simple way to practice road rules. Green light means go (or run), and red light means stop (or stand).

What time is it Mr. Wolf?
The ‘wolf’ stands on one end of the yard with his back turned and everyone else is all the way on the other side. All the children ask: “What time is it Mr. Wolf?” and the wolf answers with a time, the children would then have to walk steps corresponding to the time (e.g. if it was 5 o’clock, the children would have to take 5 steps). The game continues in the line of questioning until the wolf thinks the children are close, in which case he or she would reply “LUNCH TIME!” and would turn around and try to catch the children. Whoever is caught becomes the wolf in the next round. This game is a fun game loved by all kids.

Statues Game
Play some music and dance. When the music stops your child has to FREEZE! In class, I incorporate the theme of that week into the game. For instance, when we were learning about Autumn, I would tell the children to freeze in the shape of a tree. A simple and easy gross motor activity for preschoolers ;)

Teacher Roles and Responsibilities

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Being an early childhood teacher requires you to be willing to wear many hats.  As an experienced teacher, you are already prepared to be flexible.  As a new teacher, remember that your job description may change on a daily basis.

In most cases, your role as an early childhood teacher will be very similar to that of a guide. A guide leads others down new paths.  A guide walks beside a person on a journey, not in front.  A guide also keeps others safe from harm.

As an early childhood teacher, you will be challenged to find new experiences to share with children.  Guide children, do not lead them, and move in a direction that interests the child.  As a guide, allow the child to choose their learning and playing style while making safety your number one concern!

Give up the notion that a teacher knows everything.  Become a partner in learning and encourage children to find their own answers instead of providing the answers for them.  By being a partner, teachers learn with the children and share in their experiences.

Early childhood teachers support learning by providing activities and materials that children find engaging.  By facilitating learning, supplying a developmentally appropriate environment, interesting materials, and adequate time to explore, play, and interact, children find learning easy and fun!

To nurture is to nourish.  Nurturing a child encompasses all aspects of development: social, emotional, cognitive, and physical.  In every interaction, a teacher should nurture appropriate growth and development.

Teachers must also take care to listen to a child including interpreting words and actions.  Listening carefully helps teachers determine a child’s needs and aids in furthering the child’s development.

Teachers communicate with many people throughout the day: parents, children, support staff, the general public, and administrators.  Early childhood teachers must be prepared to communicate with all of these people.  You should feel comfortable opening up, asking questions, seeking advice, and sharing your experiences.

Paperwork, lesson planning, preparing materials and the environment, and negotiating require teachers to have strong management skills.  Managing a classroom requires organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment.  There are many balls in the air and it is your job is to keep them up and moving!

Teaching is full of many responsibilities, roles, and challenges.  Like most worthwhile endeavors, it brings both challenges and rewards.  Be flexible and you will more readily enjoy the rewards of teaching young children.

Celebrate Your Child's Learning Potential

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

n those first few years of your child’s life, his/her brain is like a sponge soaking up everything in sight and within earshot. Children are learning more and quicker during this time than at any other time in life.

As parents, you have numerous opportunities every day to help shape your child’s future through the kinds of experiences you provide. You are, in effect, your child’s first teacher.  If you provide rich, exciting experiences, your child’s learning potential is nurtured and that sponge’s absorption capacity is amplified.

Excel your child’s listening abilities by tape recording sounds from nature such as a bird singing or the wind blowing, thunder rolling or anything else you can find.  Tape record environment sounds such as a car driving by, a door shutting, a faucet running or a horn blowing.  The more sounds you can tape, the better.  Set aside a 30 minute time slot every other day and ask the child to tell you what the sounds are as you play them back.

Tell children stories that you were told as a child.  It makes no difference how old the stories are.  Each story is a new adventure to the child and you can relive it as well.  Ask your child to tell you a story and listen with all of your heart.  Let your enthusiasm show and know that you are celebrating your child’s potential and actively nourishing child development.

Sing songs appropriate to your child’s developmental stage, play dress up and pretend, role-play (take turns being each other).  Any activity that involves moving is nurturing your child’s natural instincts and motor skills.  Make puppets out of socks and stage a puppet show.  Allow the child to make up lines and be a puppet, actively participating in the learning process.

Drawing, writing and painting are invaluable activities that boost child development. Keep a variety of materials for these activities readily accessible to your child.  Participate with your child in the learning process.

If your child sees you having fun with these activities, you are modeling your desire to explore, a desire that is necessary for the learning process to take place.

Talking To Students About Report Cards

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

While the school year is coming to a close, there is one final milestone left in the school year: the final report card.

Regardless of how well the school year has gone, the arrival of a report card can be a very stressful time for students.

Good or bad, parents and children should sit down together to discuss the report card. A report card discussion is an important step for parents to become active participants in their children’s education. Oxford Learning offers these tips to help parents have a successful report card conversation with their children:

• Remember that the final report card of the school year is a big milestone for students. It’s an accomplishment to finish another year. Children want to celebrate, not be punished.

• Don’t get upset about a bad report card. Instead, keep the lines of communication open and focus on taking steps this summer to get children back on track.

• Work together to achieve a single goal. Make a resolution to improve learning weaknesses over the summer months, and to get back on track for the fall.

• Let children take ownership of their education. If children need extra help over the summer, be sure to offer them several options and let them choose the one that they think would work best for them.

• Remember that the final report card of the school year is but a snapshot of their child’s academic progress to this point. Any problems that occurred throughout the school year are in the past.

• Remain positive and take action today to make next year’s report cards a success.
