Difference Between Mass and Weight

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The prevalent way of defining mass is to say that it is the quantity of matter possessed by the object concerned. For example, a small rock has a fixed, unchanging quantity of matter. If we were to take that rock to the Moon, to Mars, or to any other part of the universe, it would have the same quantity of matter i.e. the same mass as it has on Earth. Mass is sometimes confused with weight. Weight is defined as the gravitational attraction on an object by some body, such as Earth or the Moon. Generally we say that weight of an object is the force with which it is attracted by the earth towards itself. The rock described above would have a greater weight on Earth than on the Moon because Earth exerts a greater gravitational attraction on bodies than does the Moon (six times grater on earth than that on moon.)

A more precise definition of mass can be obtained from Newton’s second law of motion according to which and assuming that the object in question is free to move horizontally without friction, if a constant force is applied to an object at rest, that object will gain speed. For example, if we hit a ball with a hammer (the constant force), the ball goes from a zero velocity (when it is at rest) to some speed as it rolls across the ground. Mathematically, the second law can be written as F = m · a, where F is the force used to move an object, m is the mass of the object, and ‘a’ is the acceleration, or increase in speed of the object. Thus force applied on an object is the product of its mass and the acquired acceleration.

In other words we can say that Newton’s second law states that the amount of speed gained by an object when struck by a force depends on the quantity of matter in the object. If we strike a bowling ball and a golf ball with the same force, the golf ball will gain more speed than will gain the bowling ball because it takes a greater force to get the bowling ball moving than it does to get the golf ball moving. This fact provides another way of defining mass. “Mass is the increase in speed of an object provided by some given force.” Or, one can solve the equation above for m, the mass of an object, to get m = F ÷ a. A kilogram, for example, can be defined as the mass that increases its speed at the rate of one meter per second when it is struck by a force of one newton.

In the International System of Units (SI system of measurement), the fundamental unit of mass is the kilogram. A smaller unit, the gram, is also used widely in many measurements. In the English system, the unit of mass is the slug. A slug is equal to 14.6 kilograms. Scientists and nonscientists alike commonly convert measurements between kilogram and pounds, not kilograms and slugs. Technically, though, a kilogram/pound conversion is not correct since kilogram is a measure of mass and pound a measure of weight. However, such measurements and such conversions almost always involve observations made on Earth’s surface where there is a constant ratio between mass and weight.

Creating a Multicultural Classroom Environment

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Culture refers to the “traditions, rituals, beliefs, and values that are shared amongst a group of people.”  Each person is a part of at least one culture.  Some families participate in several cultures.

Multiculturalism refers to the “sharing of many cultures.”

The first goal of a multicultural program is to assist children with recognizing differences, as well as similarities, among all people.  Allowing children to explore varying cultures creates opportunities for them to see that even when people have different customs and traditions, they often share some common traits, too.

Children learn that people can be different and unique, yet still have much in common.  Such realizations help young children learn to accept differences and aid in eliminating prejudice and racism.  These realizations assist children with accepting and respecting people from all cultures and backgrounds.

The second goal of a multicultural program is to encourage cooperative social skills.  As children learn to accept differences and similarities among people, they can work and get along with others better.  They begin to see other’s viewpoints and individuality. The multicultural classroom assists children from minority cultures in developing cooperation and social skills in a setting that may be unfamiliar to them.  Their self-esteem is boosted as they are recognized and accepted for their individuality. They feel good about themselves as other children recognize the worth of their traditions and customs.  The early childhood program that is culturally sensitive will build the self-confidence of its children by integrating the cultures of all the children into learning experiences.

The first ingredient for a successful multicultural program is the classroom teacher’s knowledge of diverse cultures.  Take time to learn the backgrounds of your students, as well as the populations represented in your geographic area. Educate yourself on their beliefs, values, foods, and customs.  Share those with children as you incorporate them into learning experiences. Encourage children to ask questions that help them understand more about others who have a different background from their own.

Learn the traditions of each child in your classroom.  What holidays do they celebrate?  How do they celebrate birthdays?  How are they parented?  What are their favorite foods and family traditions?

The second ingredient a preschool teacher must have to successfully implement a culturally diverse classroom environment is an attitude of acceptance and respect for other cultures.  It requires an open mind that accepts and respects differences.  Children model what they see, so the teacher’s inclusion and acceptance of different ideas, customs, and traditions helps them learn to accept and respect.

Helping children to compare, contrast, and learn about other cultures without making judgments about them requires this attitude of acceptance and respect. As teachers lead children to respect others who are different, they will begin to appreciate individuality.  As children grow and mature with these attitudes, they will have social skills that not only accept, but also applaud individuality.

The third critical ingredient for a teacher’s success in implementing a culturally diverse classroom is the ability to add a multicultural perspective into curriculum planning and classroom management skills.  This requires careful consideration of children’s cultures and traditions, and
necessitates planning to help other children experience them in learning centers and activities.

How does your program “measure up” as a multicultural environment?  Do you have multicultural materials?  Is diversity accepted and applauded?  Is the community well represented? Having children of differing cultures in the class can offer firsthand experiences and insight.  The customs and traditions of their cultures should definitely be represented in the learning environment.

Remember that providing the children with a multicultural program helps boost self-esteem and teaches them about acceptance and diversity.  A multicultural program will help children understand and work well with others as they grow and mature.

Selecting Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

When searching for a developmentally appropriate curriculum, keep in mind the philosophy behind the curriculum.  Is the curriculum based on the works of an early childhood philosopher that exposes the children to early childhood development principles?  Does the curriculum allow the teacher to implement those principles and apply them in a classroom that provides hands-on, center-based activities that promote the development of emerging skills for each individual child?  The role of the teacher is to facilitate learning, allow children to make meaningful choices, and build self-esteem through staging “successes” that encourage further exploration and learning.

Classroom management is often one of the most difficult skills for a new classroom teacher to master.  Without proper planning and appropriate classroom materials, many teachers experience  the frustrations caused by a classroom out of control.  A teacher who fails to plan using a developmentally appropriate classroom curriculum, that includes an appropriate implementation plan, will quickly find it impossible to maintain an appropriate classroom environment.

In a well organized classroom with pre-planned, developmentally appropriate activities, children are busy exploring and there will be less opportunity for conflict.  A classroom that provides activities using a developmentally appropriate curriculum creates an environment that is less frustrating and as a result, the teacher will find joy in daily activities.  Most importantly, a developmentally appropriate classroom environment will result in happy children and satisfied parents.

Curriculums that include topics such as appropriate scheduling, creating a developmentally appropriate classroom, and making the most of learning centers, will help create a classroom environment that actively engages the child and keeps his or her attention.  When implemented in the classroom, these components contribute to less discipline problems and a smoother day.

When selecting a curriculum, teachers should consider the development of the children to ensure the suggested activities in the curriculum are adaptable to the varying skill levels of each child in the group.  Developmentally appropriate curriculums offer open ended activities that allow children to make choices and include objectives for the activities offered.

The foundations of a developmentally appropriate curriculum are the needs and interests of each individual child.  These curriculums are filled with numerous activities to choose from on a daily basis, giving the classroom teacher the opportunity to incorporate a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated activities.  This allows for planned learning experiences as well as those guided by the children’s interests and abilities.  Curriculums that offer suggestions for field trips, community service projects, and special visitors in the classroom will help the children build a sense of belonging in the larger world around them.

The curriculum should include opportunities for child initiated activities that are offset by opportunities for teacher directed activities.  Child initiated activities allow children to learn independently through exploration and discovery with the guidance and supervision of the teacher.  With teacher directed activities, children are given specific teacher instructions and are expected to follow a specific plan as outlined under the direction of the classroom teacher.  In both teacher directed and child initiated activities, the curriculum selected should include objectives for the planned outcome of the activity and provide a well-rounded, engaging learning environment that stimulates children’s growth in all developmental domains.  Whether it’s climbing, singing, painting, or spending quiet time in a cozy corner, children will delight in an atmosphere that allows them to explore, investigate, learn, and discover!

Curriculum activities may often be repeated throughout the week.  Repetition of daily routines and experiences helps reinforce learning and leads to the mastery of skills. Curriculum should be designed to allow for flexibility in modifying activities to meet the individual learning styles, abilities, and interests of each child. Activities should incorporate cultural awareness through integrated holiday themes, stories and legends, art projects, and musical experiences, including input from individual children and their family’s culture, traditions, and rituals.

A curriculum should incorporate a strong literacy component and academic options that meet the standards for school readiness and help support children’s emerging skills in reading and writing in a developmentally appropriate manner.  Character education built into a curriculum will allow a teacher to help children develop positive character traits and set the foundation for high moral character in adulthood.  Recognizing that parents are partners in a young child’s journey through education, suggestions should be made to keep them involved in the program, both at home and at school.

Ongoing observation and assessment is crucial to meeting the constantly changing needs of young children. Look for a curriculum that contains an appropriate assessment component to help the teacher evaluate the children.  An appropriate assessment component aids the teacher’s efforts to meet the individual needs of each child and make program improvements as necessary. Once familiar with the curriculum, a teacher must continuously evaluate the needs of the children and decide which enrichments are best suited for each child.  By using weekly objectives, paired with the child’s needs, teachers will be able to offer opportunities for the maximum growth and development of each child.  Because children’s interests vary on a daily basis, a variety of activities must be planned for them to choose from.  By recording daily observations about the children’s interactions with the materials and activities in the learning centers and with each other, a teacher will become familiar with the children’s interests and abilities. These anecdotal notes will provide the teacher with the information needed to make better decisions about
which centers can be used to appropriately enrich the classroom and which activities to include or eliminate from future plans.

Early childhood professionals who dedicate themselves to working with young children, find that each new day presents an opportunity to help them become all they can be.  A child’s natural curiosity and eagerness to explore combined with a nurturing teacher and a well-rounded curriculum provides a magical recipe for enhanced learning and growth in all areas of child development.  A curriculum offering teachers a multitude of ideas in an easy-to-use format,  makes the burden of program planning lighter and provides the classroom teacher more time to meet the individual needs of each child.

Your Baby Can Read Reviews: Is It Effective?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I had looked at a lot of reading programs before I came across another Your Baby Can Read review and after using the product for about a year now I thought I would write my own personal experiences with it.

My wife and I have 3 children and we really emphasize the importance of a good education.  That’s why when the kids were still very young we began to work with them so they would be very well prepared for school when it came time.  A lot of people do not realize that the early years of a baby are so impressionable and that the mind can soak up all kinds of information if we just chanel that energy in the right direction.

We already knew we wanted to teach out kids to read when they were young, but we needed a program that would be best suited for out situation.  My wife is astay-at-home-mom so she would have plenty of time to work with the 3 kidos.  After seeing a TV commerical for Hooked on Phonics we gave it a try.  It was a lot of fun for us, but the kids got really bored because those sounds didn’t mean anything.  They could say “d-d dog” all they wanted, but it seemed to confuse them a little.  I know some schools use this approach in kindergarden and 1st grade, but even when children are 2 and 3 you can teach them in much more effective ways.

Then we came across Your Baby Can Read and really knew it was different.  The promises they made seemed totally off the wall though.  Teach your kid to read when they are still 5 months old?  That’s just crazy.  What I did not realize is that although they can’t read a Charles Dickens novel at that age, they COULD learn the concepts of reading and learn to recognize words and what they mean as well.

Along with the program came some books, cue cards, DVD videos and CDs and everything was really well put together.  Then as we started using Your Baby Can Read we saw the reason this system was going to be so effective.  It was using the childs senses as a tool and making it fun for them as well.  Besides seeing the word, and hearing the word, they are able to see the word in action.  All of these factors help to solidify that word in the child’s mind and help them gain confidence to read.

Right now Your Baby Can Read is offering a 30 day trial with 3 free gifts as well.  This system may not be for you, but it’s worth taking a look if you are interested.  Be sure to check out my wife’s review of Your Baby Can Read here.

I am always looking for ways to save the consumer a few extra bucks and check out and review products for people so they can be smart shoppers before they buy something.

DEALING WITH SLOW LEARNERS

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

DEALING WITH SLOW LEARNERS

A very big problem that every school faces, i.e. the difficulty to deal with the slow learners. The teachers have their big headache over these children. Handle them in homework & class work, understanding the topic, etc are the areas concerned with the slow learners. We try to advise them or we try to get result by hook or crook through putting negative enforcement by punishing them. It is estimated that due to that problem many slow learners or dropout students are being termed as weak students & thrown out of the school. But that is not the solution. The result of the action of the throwing out the child out of the school paves the way to create a dark spot in the life of the victim child. Then, where are the solutions? If the teachers will give time to think over those children, definitely the solution comes in their hand. It is also the proof in history that many slow learners have become qualified themselves as the scientists & writers in their life. So, why not we experiment with these slow learners who are with us? Have we thought over it? Have we tried to understand the life of a slow learner? The following discussion may help the teachers to improve the skill of the slow learners.

•1.     Psychological Analysis & Problem solution-

The more & more we think about the child the more we get the solution. Firstly,we have to search the problem area of the child. The problem of the child may be his family or friends or his personal condition. If we go for personal asking questions as a relative of his own, then we can be assured about getting some difficulties for which the child is not reading. Then we, from our level will try to get solution of this problem.

•2.     Guidance from his level-

Child has a level of his own. Level of understanding is different from one child to another. The weak child more often can’t understand the studies because he has not understood the previous formula/concept in the previous classes. How can he understand the concept of class IX if he has not understood the simple concept of class VII & VIII? That’s why the child should be personally taught from his understanding level.

•3.     Encouragement in small success-

The greatest factor for the success of the life of the child is his encouragement. If we try to find out the strengths of the weak child then we come across some of them. If we try to applaud him with encouraging words & give confidence he definitely feels his importance & worth. Once the child has grown his confidence means he will definitely improve. The most important cause of his weakness is we; the teachers always give importance to the good children & neglect the weaker in the class. Encouragement can change the whole personality of a child.

•4.     Fixing the goal & Prescribing a Time table-

The child should be persuaded to make a time table for the study purpose. Sometimes some children have no goal regarding study. The teacher should observe those children & inspire them to fix the goal for the life & help him to make a time table for every day work so that the child will be captured through the time  table to do the things at write time.

•5.     Giving Memory tips-

More often the child forgets what ever he learns. That’s why he loses his confidence on him & differentiates between him & the good students. The teacher’s role is to give the tips such as ‘how to recall’, ‘in which way to write systematically’, ‘when to learn’, ‘how to learn’ etc.

•6.     Giving importance in the class-

It’s always seen that the class room teaching goes on with the direction & understanding of the strong children. But if the average children do not understand your teaching & you are just running towards the completion of syllabus then the whole teaching is a futile one. Some times it’s very urgent to go near the weak child & ask personally whether he has understood or not. Here the teacher’s asking approach should be very polite & sweet, not rude.

•7.     Self reading method-

Most of the weak children are found that they neglect self reading. They may have the language understanding problem for which they do not take interest to read. If the teacher freely tells the child to come at home or to him in extra time for understanding the key words then little little the child will take interest to self reading. Then definitely he improves himself slowly.

•8.     Questions for practice-

Some questions can be given time to time to engage the learner in the habit of study. That is a practice which can enable the student to come across the learning point at a regular basis.

•9.     Special guidance beyond school hour-

Basically we the teachers now have become very professional. After school hour we hesitate to give even a single minute to the children which reduce our rapport. The weak children, they need special attention beyond school hour that is personally to take up the child’s difficulty. We the teachers, beyond school hour, either we waste time in gossiping or earn money in tuition. If we give 1hour extra time for the weak children then definitely they will improve. Because it is very difficult to give time to the weak ones in the classroom itself.

•10.              Seating arrangement-

More often we see that the strong children in the class room don’t wish to sit with the weak children. The weak ones always sit with the weak. This is another cause for the no improvement of the weak children. If the class teacher prepares seating arrangements properly to benefit the weak children-to make arrangement to sit the strong one with the weak one & instruct to the strong one to help the weak one in studies then the weak ones may be improved in studies.

•11.              Search physical or mental problem-

The teacher should find out any physical or mental problem of the child. A child is not writing anything from the black board means may be some eye defect. A child is not obeying the words of the teacher, may be some mental problem is there. Some children are severely affected by the physical problems which made them lazy to read & write. Firstly the teacher/parent should find out the problems then treat them accordingly.

•12.              Creating confidence level in his interest areas-

The teacher should observe the child & secretly know the interest areas of the child. Even if the child plays, act, does some work the teacher/parent should find out his interest/specialty. Because, every child is special. The encouragement can be started from the child’s interest areas. When the child builds his confidence in his interest area then we can expand & inspire the same confidence in other areas also.

•13.              BE A FRIEND TO HIM-

Be a friend to the weak child. Teacher should try to knowingly mix with the child more & more with him. Unknowingly when the friendship is build with that child then the child starts loving the teacher. The starting of love starts the surrender of the child towards the same teacher. Then the teacher, whatever he tells the child obeys it. The mystery of all success is the love, understanding & friendship.

Oh teacher! Many more children are waiting to catch your lovable hand. They are searching you as a friend. They are so called by the society as slow learners or weak ones but actually they are not. May be some unfortunate moment misguided them. Is it not noble to improve them, support them to develop in their own pace? Is it not wise to take care of them? The history has proved the slow learners such as Thomas Edison & Gandhi as the world class Scientist & Leader respectively.

Every child is special. As every child has a soul, there is every possibility of improvement, sooner or later. The goal of the soul is to develop. The source of energy is lying within them but the only thing is to stretch the hand of confidence towards them which will solve their problem & improve their quality.

Handwriting Practice and Pencil Grips

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

A Good pencil grip is one of the first steps to developing good handwriting skills. As a parent you can help you child to develop good pencil grip. Correct pencil grip will allow your child to write quickly and smoothly, while a tight or incorrect grip can hinder writing.

The Tripod Pencil Grasp: This pencil grip is the one that is most recommended by schools. The pencil should be positioned so that there is equal pressure between the thumb, the side of the middle finger and the tip of the index finger. All fingers are bent slightly. When a pencil is held correctly, the thumb and forefinger form an oval when a child holds the pencil. Tension in the hand or fingers indicates weak fine motor skills.

You can improve your child’s fine motor skills through various writing activities or through other fun activities which involve movement of fingers (like playing with play dough).

“We all know alphabets, so why not we just write the alphabets on a sheet of paper and get our children to practice their handwriting?”

If you are thinking like that then you are not alone. However I am sorry to say that it is the wrong approach. We need to practice the alphabets as per the method approved by the education board.

Good handwriting worksheets have numbers and arrows on each alphabet. Good handwriting worksheets have to take a step by step approach. ‘1? is where you start from – so the child starts at ‘1? and goes along the direction of the arrow. And then the child goes to ‘2? and moves along the direction of the arrow next to ‘2?. And then finally the child goes to ‘3? and moves along the direction of the arrow next to ‘3?

One of the other benefits of getting children to practice their handwriting on formal handwriting sheets is that the letters are in between the lines. This way you are teaching them about proportion of the lines. Practice is the best way to improve a child’s writing.

Fine Motor Skills is the ability to control small precise movements with the fingers, wrists and hands. Its important to practice the fine motor skills for young children. These skills play an important role in a child’s handwriting.

Good posture is important and plays a key role in handwriting skills. Bad posture creates stress on young spines. A lowered chin means your neck muscles are carrying the weight and the strain will flow right down the neck and down the back. So don’t let your kids slouch.

We have all heard ‘handwriting analysis’ before. ‘Graphology’ is the analysis of handwriting particularly in relation human mind. People who have the skills to analyze handwriting determine a person’s character by analyzing their handwriting.

Don’t underestimate the importance of good handwriting skills. The best age to teach good handwriting skills to your children is between 3 and 10. However don’t make it a boring ritual. Practicing handwriting is hard work and can be quite boring for kids. Try to make it a fun exercise. Don’t be too hard on them and go slow.

Sandy Naidu runs the website – http://www.handwritingebooks.com/ On this site she sells uppercase and lowercase handwriting sheets. All the alphabets used on these handwriting worksheets are approved by education software cooperative. There are also numerous fine motor skills exercises.

Deprived She-Angels Are Just A Garbage!!!!!!!!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Long days ago,I had a by chance trip to a government girls primary school situated in the heart of much known and heavenly city (ABBOTTABAD) of Pakistan.I was accompanied by my one senior of then humanitarian organization from Germany. As we dropped from the car,an aged but humble man wearing poorly clothes hurriedly came to us.He got  misunderstanding and took us for government officials of education department! We explained that we were not some government s men but from an humanitarian organization. He was looking depressed and thoughtful .I asked him that why he looked so worried. He told that owner of school building had warned his school staff to vacate the building with in no time.He further told us that not only she-teachers but all she-children at school were in great discomfort due to this disheartning situation.Building owner had rudely and angrily announced that if his building is not vacated soon, then he himself will throw all stuff of school on the footpath.Everdevoted but helpless teachers were looking for some other building which could serve as a school. After few days that unlucky school was shifted to an other building upon rent. One day in my office,I said to my senior named Muhammad Yousef from Peshawer,”Let we visit to that deprived and neglected school in order to learn their miseries.”He was much happy with mine this idea.We went to the said school(situated near Pakistan Military Academy Kakul)by car and both of us almost wept to see the helplessness of those innocent angels! There were only two short rooms for six classes to teach! There were hardly two blackbords(faded and nearly broken)for hundreds of children. We saw that a small part of wall inside  room was painted in black, this part of wall was serving as blackboard!!!!!All children had most normal and somewhere just torn school bags with them. They had no chairs to sit on!In fact all children were from most poor families. We learnt that this school was launched on 2nd,February1971 in a rented building but it could not get its own building even after long four DECADES!You can imagine the cruelty with this centre of GOOD that only during seven years(from 2002 to 2009),it was unkindly thrown and kicked out from one rented building to other for five times. We found that there was no washroom there for children and they were compelled to go in the neighbouring open filelds for thier need of wash room!!They had to cross a busy road (in front of school)to reach the fields. Thus their innocent lives were always at risk due the the justified possibility of a dangerous road accident! We learnt that no one ever protested over their deprivation!Government says”any local must donate a piece of land first, then it will build a school there”.In long four decades there was none to donate his small piece of land for those UNTOUCHABLE children! This situation is more than a Curse for the FALSE slogans of our rulers who claim to be sympathetic towards poor masses of thier country! All the rulers and political figures of this society are alike and careless towaeds the genuine need of hundreds of innocent children.Few days back ,Our PM disclosed an amusing by saying”My sister in law was born in a car.”I ask my prime minister that your sister in law was million and bullion times fotunate as compared to the hundreds of children facing deprivation at GOVERNMENT GIRLS PRIMARY SCHOOL THANDA CHOHA ABBOTTABAD.In fact our rulers are not free to worry over the exploitation of innocents.I came to the conclusion that why hundreds of innocent children are without their own school building till today(even after long 40 years). They all were not born in a car. They were born in the shadow of mad poverty! Those innocents will go on seeing teasing deprivations because of thier own natural gilt that THEY WERE NOT BORN IN A CAR!May  our rulers live long and let the deprived people here lead their lives in a HELL!This lone but most true story of a government  girls primary school ought to be enough to PROVE our HUGE AND GREAT  CONCERN and focus upon the importance of primary education for girls!I beg from donor organizations and philanthropists to come forward in order to build a school building for those who are untouchable in the eyes of all here!By spending about 50 thousand  dollars, any kind donor can build the school building for hundreds of most needy children which were not born in a car but in POVERTY!If any donor or an humanist is willing to help those she-angels,I am here to saluterecognise hisher fine spirit.I promise to provide  such donor with every manner of facility in order to achieve this goal.I complain from MOST HIGH GOD that why those innocents were not born in a car!

I am sajjad haider tanoli. To know me is to love me!
